All About LaTresa
Growing Up
I grew up as the youngest of three girls in the open countryside of Oklahoma, USA. My sisters were several years older than me and practically helped our parents raise me. I spent much of my childhood outside playing with my dog and cats, helping my dad with whatever project he had at the time, and exploring around our property. Unlike a lot of my classmates, I enjoyed school and learning new things. My favorite question to ask has always been “How does that work?” or “How does that happen?”. And yes, I do still want to know the “how” of everything.
Experience
My first experience with children younger than me (besides cousins who are so close in age they don’t really count) was when my niece was born. She was also the first kid that I was allowed to babysit. In high school, along with academics, school clubs, and my school’s bowling team, I also became the backup babysitter for a family in my neighborhood when my friend couldn’t. Those children helped me realize that I had absolutely no idea how to actually take care of kids, though they told their mom that I was good at it.
Writing
In fifth grade, my teacher assigned a three-page story. I can’t remember what, exactly, it was about, but that assignment opened a door that has shaped the rest of my life. I began writing my own stories for fun along with some poetry. It became such a joy for me that I earned a college degree in English with an emphasis in creative writing. While I haven’t delved into the publishing world much yet, I do still enjoy creating novels to this day.
Childcare
In the last ten or so years, I have also developed a yearning to help children be the best they can be. I worked in a daycare for roughly a year and a half, most of which was in the youngest infant room. Yes, I earned an income snuggling, feeding, and playing with babies. I followed that job with a seven-year career as a nanny for four wonderful, beautiful, smart children who have taught me as much as I’ve taught them.
Reason for This Blog
With the youngest starting Pre-K next fall, I decided to combine my experience with my love of writing and start this blog! My hope is that this website will help other caregivers make sure the children they love get the best start possible.
